photo of the week: blue mosque, istanbul

This is one of the many Blue Mosque photos we took in Istanbul, Turkey. The outside looks massive, but the inside of the mosque is even more magnificent with all of the different colors and unique lighting. I will be posting more photos (along with photos of Hagia Sophia) in my Istanbul trip post.

giveaway time: necklace from etsy

Hi, everyone. I want to start incorporating regular giveaways into my blogging routine because I think it will make things more interesting - and everyone loves free stuff! I thought about doing something Scottish for my first giveaway (don't worry, I will later) but stumbled across this dainty necklace from Gem Passion Jewelry. I love the look of hammered jewelry because it's so unique, and I've been wanting a thin, gold necklace for the upcoming trips we have planned (and traveling with super expensive jewelry is never a good idea).

To enter the drawing, please share my blog on either Pinterest or Facebook, and leave a comment below regarding what you would like to see/hear about on caphilltoscotland.com. I will be contacting the winner via email, so please leave a valid email address! Good luck!

* The Etsy necklace giveaway will end on Wednesday, April 4th at 5pm EST and a winner will be chosen at random with the random.org generator.
* One entry per person.
* If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent/guardian's permission before entering.
* You must leave a valid email address along with your comments.
*Unfortunately, this specific giveaway is for residents of the United States only. Stay tuned for other opportunities.

travel essentials: avène soapless gel cleanser

I found this facial cleanser at a drugstore in Paris after I realized I had forgotten mine in the UK. To my surprise, it's just as gentle as Cetaphil (I've been using this since middle school), and it's sulfate free. It removes my makeup, keeps my skin clear, and best of all, the cap is designed to prevent leaks which is a plus for travelers - I hate opening my suitcase after a long flight to find a big, gooey product spill.

westie fever: new apron

Today, we added a new piece to our Westie collection - this delightful apron. Malcolm is so embarrassed.

(If we ever move back to DC, he is totally wearing bow ties. And I'm taking glamour shots in front of the Capitol building).

ramblings: the world is a book (blah, blah, blah)

The best thing about living in Aberdeen is the discount airlines. Scratch that, let me start over. The best thing about living in Scotland is the discount airlines. Aberdeen's airport is smaller than most airports in the Midwest (and the restaurant options suck even more) so a two-hour drive to Edinburgh airport is usually required. The drive would be absolutely stunning if we were to leave at a reasonable hour, but since B doesn't want to use all of his vacation time on weekend trips, we usually start the drive fairly late on a Thursday or Friday night, when it's pitch-black and miserable. When this happens, the full two hours consists of coffee, bitching, B flying through speed cameras (I'm supposed to look out for them but I lost my glasses in Amsterdam - more on this later), more bitching, and me struggling with car sickness (why are there so many roundabouts?! And why does B fly through the speed cameras?!). But I digress - back to discount airlines...
All of the European discount airlines are priced very similarly, but we try to avoid Ryanair and book with Jet2 and easyJet because, well, we don't want to die.  Ryanair is always in the news for something cringe-worthy; wanting to get rid of their airplane bathrooms, creating standing-room only sections (that's probably not safe), and fixing their airplanes with duct tape. Seriously, they put duct tape on the pilot's cracked window. You can probably guess that this did NOT work and they had to turn around mid-air.

travel essentials: clinique all about eyes

I don't like drinking water - tragic since we need it to live (details). And since I'm dehydrated 90% of the time, I need a good moisturizer for my face, and for the skin under my eyes. After a long day of traveling and feeling absolutely dried out, my go-to serum is Clinique All About Eyes. The ingredients are gentle enough for my sensitive skin, and the jar is so small, it's easy to pack away for travel (we only use backpacks!). You could say I'm obsessed.

ramblings: old-fashioned living

A few days ago, we moved into a new flat in Scotland. The location of the townhouse isn't as close to the city centre as we would like it to be, but the benefits definitely outweigh the cons. Like, I'm actually happy here. Really happy. There are no motion-sensored street lamps outside of our bedroom window continuously turning on and off, there are no drunk Scottish men, stumbling home from the bar, knocking over rubbish bins (heh), yelling and swearing in the middle of the night - and, the area is so cute. Instead of going to the grocery store for everything, we can choose between the butcher, the cheesemonger, the fishmonger, and the local bakery. Tiny, family-owned cafes line the streets, and there are at least three different cherry blossom-filled (a touch of DC!) parks within walking distance (Malcolm appreciates this). Oh, and no big deal, but we have a milkman. Yes, a milkman delivers glass-bottle jugs to our doorstep every morning.

photo of the week: malcolm post-op

Malcolm is not a fan of the cone he has to wear, but he doesn’t mind the post-operative boiled chicken and scrambled eggs.

travel essentials: hanging toiletry bag

Time and time again, a hanging toiletry bag (similar to this one) has saved my sanity. Whether it's being used during a trip, or in our small Scottish flat, it's super convenient and easy to set up. The compartments are water-proof and it's small enough to tuck away into a backpack or a small suitcase. Perfect! My toiletry bag is so old I've forgotten the brand, and it doesn't have a tag on it - but this one from The Container Store is very similar and should work fine.

photo(s) of the week: forvie nature preserve

One of our favorite places to explore on the weekend is Forvie beach, one of Scotland's many nature reserves.

photo(s) of the week: cliff trail & dunnottar castle

This coastal trail (lots of cliffs!) from Stonehaven to Dunnottar castle has beautiful views of the North Sea and if you're lucky, you'll even see seals and puffins floating around.

Dunnottar is one of our favorite castles in Scotland because of it's placement on the edge of a massive cliff, and because the ruined fortress has a lot of character and many rooms to explore. I highly recommend a visit.

photo of the week: eilean donan castle

This Scottish castle in the western Highlands is absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately we were not able to go in (closed for winter), but the view from the outside was worth the visit.

ramblings: a clean house is the sign of a wasted life. yeah...

After about a month of living in Scotland, sitting around alone, wondering what the hell I had done, one of B's co-worker's wives told me about an expat women's group she was considering joining. I agreed to tag along to one of the newcomer coffee meetings and afterwards thought, what the heck, might as well join. It's not like I have ANYONE else to talk to.
The group consists of some of the kindest, funniest, most intelligent women I have ever met, but boy do they piss me off. Most of these women have been on field assignments with their husbands before so they have the whole housewife thing down to a science. While this sounds great, it makes me wonder how B puts up with me. I am the Worst. Housewife. Ever. They cook 5 course meals, bake everything from scratch, take care of multiple kids, dogs, and still have time for yoga, PTA meetings, facials and group events. I, on the other hand, can barely dress myself in the morning. Just kidding. I like getting dressed up, but I would rather work a twelve-hour day than bake a casserole and clean a toilet with a grubby brush that was once white (blehh!). You see, I wasn't hardwired to be domestic. But everyone can learn the ropes of domesticity, right? So that's not the problem. The problem is television.
